Abstract Certain dietary patterns, in which fruits and nuts are featured prominently, reduce risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Review Introduction It is well established that certain dietary patterns decrease disease risk and benefit the management of diabetes and cardiovascular disease [ 1 — 3 ]. Nutrient contribution of dried fruit and nuts and their effect on diet quality Three healthy dietary patterns are recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans—a Healthy US-style Pattern, a Healthy Vegetarian Pattern, and a Healthy Mediterranean-style pattern.

Three Fruot dietary Combinatios are recommended by the Dietary Guidelines for Americans—a Healthy US-style Pattern, a Healthy Vegetarian Pattern, and Combinatinos Healthy Mediterranean-style pattern.

Fruits, nuts, and seeds play a prominent role in all three of these food-based dietary patterns, which recommend between 2 Nut and Fruit Combinations 2 ½ CCombinations equivalents of fruit a day and oz Superfood energy snacks per week of nuts and seeds [ 16 ].

Nur consumption in the U. Combinaations been low historically and has Feuit little in recent years. Children generally fare better with fruit intake, but not by much.

Data from National Health and Fuit Examination Survey NHANES Combinarions showed that Nuut intake of fruit among children has improved slightly, the majority are still far from age-adjusted recommended intakes [ 19 ]. The low intake of fruits and Body composition and gender differences is Frit missed opportunity to add an nutrients to diets [ 19 ].

Traditional dried fruit those with no sugar added, anr as raisins, prunes, dates, and figs have Cpmbinations a staple of Mediterranean diets, valued for their sweetness and long-term stability. Traditional dried fruit has a similar nutrient profile as the original food and, as a result, dried fruit is typically a good source of fiber and potassium Table 1.

The consumption of dried fruit today is even less than fresh or canned; about 6. In an analysis of NHANES data from —, raisins were the most commonly consumed dried fruit. Because they are used throughout the food system in products such as breads, muffins, cookies and cereals, raisins are consumed 6 times more than other dried fruits.

Additionally, adult dried fruit consumers had significantly higher intakes of fiber, vitamins A, C, E, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and folate. Vitamin B12 was the only vitamin that was not higher among dried fruit consumers [ 21 ].

Consumers of dried fruit had significantly higher intakes of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, and potassium and significantly lower intakes of sodium [ 21 ].

The researchers also examined the association between dried fruit intake and diet quality using the Healthy Eating Index HEI [ 21 ]. The HEI is an objective measure of diet quality developed and validated by the USDA.

Tree nuts have been consumed for thousands of years, providing a concentrated source of energy, nutrients, and bioactive compounds, including unsaturated fatty acids [ 22 ]. While nutrient content varies among species, tree nuts generally are good to excellent sources of protein, dietary fiber, vitamins E and K, folate, magnesium, copper, and potassium and are rich in phytosterols and phenolic compounds Table 2.

Consumption of nuts is even less common than for fruit, with a small minority, about 6. Mixed nuts containing peanuts which are technically legumes are the most commonly consumed nuts, walnuts the least. A recent analysis of data from NHANES — examined the nutrient adequacy of more than 14, adult tree nut consumers vs non-consumers, excluding pregnant and lactating women [ 24 ].

In this study, tree nut consumers were more likely to be non-Hispanic, older, have higher incomes, were less likely to smoke and were more physically active than non-consumers. Consumers of nuts also had significantly higher energy intakes, about kcal more, on days that nuts were consumed, than non-consumers.

It is interesting, however, that despite the significant increase in energy intake, there was no increase in BMI or waist circumference [ 24 ].

The analysis of NHANES — data also found that fewer consumers of tree nuts and tree nut butters had usual intakes UI of vitamins A, E and C, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, and zinc that were below the Estimated Average Requirement EAR [ 24 ]. Consumers of tree nuts and tree nut butters were also more likely to have UIs above the Adequate Intakes AIs for dietary fiber and potassium.

The higher intake of fiber among nut consumers was of the same magnitude as for dried fruit consumers [ 2124 ]. Tree nut consumers also had a significantly higher potassium intake; Sodium intake was high in both groups. Diet quality, as measured by the HEI, was significantly higher in tree nut consumers compared to non-consumers Table 3.

In addition, total fruit, dark green and orange vegetables, sodium and solid fat, alcohol and added sugars SoFAAS kilocalories component scores were higher in tree nut consumers than non-consumers. Nuts and dried fruit have a complementary portfolio of nutrients.

There is a cultural tradition of pairing them as snacks or in prepared foods. Yet, no study has evaluated the impact of combining nuts and dried fruit on the nutritional quality of the diet. Table 3 shows the potential effect of pairing tree nuts and dried fruit on diet quality, by comparing the differences in HEI scores between each consumption group and the corresponding non-consumption group.

While nuts and dried fruit consumers have similar increases in HEI scores over non-consumers, there is no complete overlap of these groups shaded areas. Combining these foods may thus further increase HEI scores.

This is important because small changes in the diet can have a significant impact on health. A study calculated the potential public health impact on CVD mortality of replacing a unhealthy snacks e.

They found that simply replacing one unhealthy snack per day with a healthy one might prevent approximately cases of CVD per year in the UK [ 27 ]. This combination was considerably more protective than each behavior alone [ 28 ]. The limited number of clinical studies on dried fruit and cardiometabolic health suggests that it can lower the postprandial insulin response, modulate sugar absorption Glycemic Indexpromote satiety, and have a beneficial effect on blood pressure BP [ 2930 ].

The results showed that each incremental intake of 3 servings a week of certain whole fruits, including grapes or raisins, dried plums, apples or pears, grapefruits, and blueberries, was associated with a significant reduction in risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Not all fruits were associated with a reduction in risk. Like many fresh fruits, dried fruits have a low to moderate glycemic index GI and a single serving exerts a low glycemic load GL [ 32 ]. The GI measures the blood-glucose-raising effect of an amount of a carbohydrate-containing food that provides 50 g of carbohydrates [ 33 ].

The GL predicts the blood sugar response to a standard serving of a food [ 34 ]. Diets with a low GL help manage blood sugar and lipid levels and may lower the risk of developing diabetes [ 3536 ].

A later study measured raisin GI and Insulin Index in 10 sedentary adults, 10 pre-diabetic individuals, and 11 endurance athletes [ 37 ]. The GI was The Insulin Index was correspondingly low as well. In a more recent study, the GI, Insulin Index, and glycemic response of raisins was assessed in 10 healthy subjects [ 38 ].

The study also showed that a serving of raisins 28 g exerts a low GL. Compared to an equal amount of carbohydrate from white bread, raisins had a significantly lower postprandial glucose and insulin response. This indicates that raisins can modulate the glycemic response Fig. A single-crossover study found little difference between the glycemic responses to cal servings of grapes or raisins among subjects with type 2 diabetes.

Incremental AUC iAUC for glucose A and insulin B after consumption of 3 meals containing 50, 50 and 20 g of available carbohydrate from white bread WBraisins R50 and raisins R20respectively. Differences in blood glucose responses were found when subjects were given a nut and dried fruit snack raisins and peanuts or processed snacks chocolate-coated candy bar or a cola drink with crisps [ 40 ].

Peak glucose concentrations tended to be higher after the processed snacks than after the peanuts raisin snacks and plasma insulin levels were significantly lower, despite having similar amounts of total carbohydrate, sugar, fat, and protein.

Because of their fat content, adding nuts to a dried fruit snack would be expected to lower the glycemic response. Eating fruit has been associated with reductions in body weight. Individuals consuming more than 20 g dried fruit per day had higher energy intakes than those who consumed less, but had a lower mean body weight, body mass index, and waist circumference.

Intervention studies with raisins show that consumption may have a beneficial effect on blood lipids. crackers, cookies of the same caloric content [ 45 ]. Hypertension is a primary risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

Raisin consumption was also associated with statistically significant reductions in both systolic and diastolic BP. No significant changes in body weight were observed within or between groups.

Compared to processed snacks, those who consumed raisins had a significant reduction in systolic BP, but not in diastolic BP.

Body weight, BMI, waist circumference, fasting insulin, homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance, total cholesterol, LDL, HDL, triglyceride, or non-HDL cholesterol levels did not differ with treatment [ 46 ] Table 4. These results highlight the impact that the composition of snacks can have on blood sugar.

Mid-afternoon is always when I get tired and want to stop working for the day, so a little snack like this really peps me up. These can be easily tossed into little sealed containers at the beginning of the week to grab on your way out the door every morning. You can add them to a bento box or keep a few baggies around in your pantry for a not-so-bad-for-you mini-meal between meals.

This weekend, we're snacking on them on the road , as we head out for our yearly summer vacation. There are so many ways you can and should eat these! The one thing you have to keep in mind with these is portion size. These aren't meant to be a meal, just a really tasty break between meals.

Dried fruit can be very sugar and calorie dense, so imagine if those fruits were still fresh - would you really eat 50 cherries in one sitting?

Two things I have found is a recipe for lemon and lavender shortbread; and chicken with garam masala and lavender. I'm so glad you've been enjoying the chart, Joanne!

And I absolutely love baking with lavender. It pairs well with citrus, berries, and herbs like mint, sage, rosemary, thyme, and oregano. I also have a recipe for Earl Grey Lavender Cupcakes that you might enjoy! Have you thought of adding teas to your list?

Earl Grey, Black Tea, Jasmine, that sort of thing? They do pair really well with many of the flavors. I make tea flavored macaron shells and fill them with all sorts of buttercreams and ganaches. That's a great idea, Lisa! I'll definitely keep that in mind when I update the chart in the near future.

Great job Leslie on compiling the flavor pairing chart! I know how much effort it takes to do that. The other day I was writing on my blog about one of my favorite ingredients to work with, Yuzu.

It has been in use in Japanese and Korean cuisine for a long time, but for myself as a bartender, I use it in my cocktail recipes. It has the flavor profile of lemon, tangerine, orange, and a hint of grapefruit. Yuzu - Szechuan peppercorn syrup, ginger, lemongrass, lychee, raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, lemon, pineapple, mango, banana.

I used your chart and made a coconut pan cotta with mango and pineapple jelly. It turned out amazing!!! Thanks a million, you were such a big help. TYSM , Im going to make a coconut Panna cotta and I was looking for fruits I could use and this helps soooo much.

I think im going to top it with a orange , mango and pineapple syrup. Again this was SO helpful. Thanks for the awesome chart!!! How cool! I've never actually tried feijoa before. I did a quick search, and it looks like they pair well with apples, dark chocolate, coconut, and lime zest.

I love blackberry with rosemary and lavender for jelly. I made some blackberry-rosemary port last summer and it is delicious! Would cherries and rosemary work together, or cherries and cardamom? Would like to make some interesting jam combos this summer.

That does sound delicious, Cindy! I think both rosemary and cardamom would work well with cherries. I love the idea of the food chart! I now use it to make new smoothies and to add them to my recipe book! However, there is one fruit that I would like you to add and that is dragonfruit! Anyway, thanks!

Thanks for the suggestion, Nargis! I plan to keep updating the chart as time goes on, and I'll make sure to add dragonfruit 😊. I've tried to subscribe twice to receive this PDF file. Would you mind emailing it to me? I've checked spam, and all of my folders.

ID love to have a print out of this amazing list. I'm new to all of this. Is this how it works??? I'm just trying to avoid another disaster of combining star anise and lemon as a flavored water. Not a good combo!!

Hi, Renee! So yes I have made some disasters too, it was mango with freshly squeezed lemon a bit too much with water and sweeteners it tasted really sour and I couldn't fix it.

Most of it had to go down the drain. I felt so bad wasting ingredients However I have made a new bluenana smoothie and it tasted great! If you would like to know, the ingredients were. Hello I did not see fig on the chart. I know fig and some cheeses go together, but how about spices? or herbs?

The adds in your Australian version cover the right hand side and just leave a blank space when closed. Yep, they usually can!

I wouldn't recommend mixing too many flavors all at once, but mixing a few at a time should work well. Great chart! Do you have a pdf copy of it yet? I make wine as a hobby and your chart would come in handy for creating new recipes.

Hi, Brad! I actually just finished creating the PDF copy — you can download it by filling out the form above it's shown above the chart. I'm sorry you're having trouble with the chart! Are you referring to the one here on the blog or the one you can get emailed to you?

Would love to see this in PDF as others have mentioned. No access to a computer and this is too valuable to lose. So glad to hear you like the chart, Patricia! I'm actually working on turning it into a PDF now, and I'll let you know when that's ready. Just wanted to let you know that the PDF version is ready, Patricia!

You can download it by filling out the form above it's shown above the chart. If you wanted, you could add non-traditional fruits, such as cucumber, tomato, and tamarind. which all pair well with lime, melon, and strawberry. You could also add Salt under Misc.

It's great added to melon, cucumber, lime, grapefruit, tomato, and tamarind. You didn't show many pairings for lime, itself I've added my favorites below. I'm so glad you enjoyed the post! And thanks for sharing all those awesome additions.

I'm hoping to update the table and make it more expansive over the next few months, so keep an eye out for that! I love this. Because of your list, I made a new smoothie for my family. I make them every day, and have been for years, with a base of spinach or kale, then some fruit, water, and maple syrup, and sometimes lime juice, and I was looking for something to spice up my recipes.

So, based on your chart, I used fresh apples with some caramel flavoring, and it was a caramel apple smoothie. It was delicious! I've looked up lots and lots of sites for information like this, and yours is the best, most thorough, and creative I've ever found.

Thank you so much! If you put this into a nicely designed pdf, I'm sure lots of people would print it out and put it on their fridge. I definitely would. And what an awesome idea to make this resource into a PDF — I think I'm going to try and do this over the next few months. I'll let you know if and when I do 🙂.

I'm grateful that people go through the content, probably just because they know how beneficial the fruits are, that's great! Wasn't able to easily track that right column though, but much thanks for the content, seemed very useful and helpful,,!!

So glad you enjoyed, Godfrey! I'm going to try and work on improving the table itself in the future, so I appreciate the feedback 😊. Yes I also would like to see pdf that I could download. Im not able to scroll across to see spice list on android.

Thanks Ken. Hi, Ken! I just finished creating a PDF version of this chart — you can download it by filling out the form shown above the chart. I'm a bit dismayed that you can mix banana with strawberries, but not strawberries with bananas.

Hi, MK! I actually just made a printer-friendly version of the chart — you can download it by filling out the form shown above the chart. Hi, can you please fix the site? Mobile version does not display the full list it's cut off , and no one has time to get out their laptop in the middle of the grocery store.

I just made. cherry-thyme protein ice cream and it was amaaaazing! It tastes so refreshing, definitely a flavor combo to keep doing. Yesterday I found my favourite cheesecake flavor combination.

So simple, but I love it. I flavored the cheesecake itself with vanilla bean and lemon juice and zest, folding into the batter a handful of raspberries finely chopped to add light raspberry flavour to the batter. Then I topped it with a homemade whipped cream and raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries.

However, I found the cheesecake itself no toppings to be good as is. It spoke for itself in flavour, just not so much in presentation. I made a cobbler today that combined rhubarb, raspberries and peaches flavored with lemon zest, fresh grated ginger, cracked black pepper and a pinch of sea salt.

The cobbler has an interesting cake topping made using reverse creaming method and the top coated with fine grain sugar. Carefully pour very hot tap water over the top and bake minutes for a 9x13 pan. The top will crack like a brûlée. The cake under is soft and fluffy. a very small amount, minced A traditional accompaniment is a spoon of thick cream skimmed off the top of milk direct from the cow.

I'm just starting to experiment. I've tried Strawberry-Rhubarb, Starberry-Orange, Strawberry-Basil, and Strawberry-Pineapple jam recipes. I did Peach-Orange and Peach-Blueberry but I haven't tried the latter yet. I also made Apple-Rhubarb. Great site! I put crushed pineapple apricot and dark black cherries in a ho.

emade thickened cream and added dark chocolate pudding just the powder stored it up and my family loved it so much I didn't have any leftovers which is very unusual it's kinda a twist on pistachio salad. ie the ac dental gourmet. I love Fruits. I am at a loss as to how to use this info. If you'd like, you can use the search bar on this page to find related recipes for those fruits!

To rhubarb, think about adding blueberries as a good fruit pairing. A few years ago I stopped at an apple orchard while driving in MA. In their jam selections they had a blueberry rhubarb one. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was delicious. I would love it if this was a printable list so that I could hang it in my kitchen!!

It really is a big help. By the way, I made nectarine jam the other day and had only mxscovado sugar, cinnamon and ginger. Everyone says it's like summer in your mouth. That's such a great idea. I'll look into it and try and create a printable PDF for this 🙂 Also, that jam sounds wonderful - I wish you could send some my way!

and printed that out. Hi, Angie! Just wanted to let you know that I created a downloadable PDF of this chart — you can download it by filling out the form shown above the chart.

Strawberry and pistachio are awesome together. I just made strawberry pistachio cake and it was amazing. I just put a Danish Almond Puff pastry in the oven, I dont have any slivered almonds for the top; i have cashews, peanuts, pecans, sunflower seeds, no almonds.

I plan on making an upside down orange cake with satsuma orange liquor in the mix but I was going to serve it with a spiced butter rum sauce. I noticed rum was not a pairing for orange. so I have an idea for a cinqo de mayo desert. Im calling a choclate margarhita tart. Soft baked Lime Sugar cookie base, tequilla infused mexican chili chocolate filling, coco and seasalt dust, fresh whip with lime zest.

I am wondering if, since there is lime in the cookie base, is the zest on top to much? Also should I flavor the whip with something, if so, got suggestions? I think the zest would be a nice touch and that it would tie everything together well!

Something like a coconut whip might be nice to go on top 🙂 Definitely let me know how it turns out - I'd love to see a picture of the final tart! What a wonderful and useful resource. Do you have suggestions for persimmon pairings?

I'm thinking cinnamon, clove, ginger, etc might be quite nice. I'm glad you found it helpful! Those all seem like they would pair great with persimmon — in addition, you could also try apple, black pepper, almond, hazelnut, or walnut.

I'm planning on expanding this list soon, so I'll make sure to add persimmon on then. I was wondering about doing passion fruit, myself and the other people im baking it for do not like coconut so was wondering about other options to pair it with,.

Thanks for the note, Zane! I updated the chart, so it has a lot more information now. I hope you enjoy! Thank you so much for letting me know! I just updated the chart so that peach is in the first column - I hope that helps 🙂.

I can't seem to see the whole page, maybe because I'm on a mobile device, some help would be greatly appreciated. Hi Aly — I apologize for that inconvenience! I just accessed the page on mobile as well, and it does seem to have difficulty loading the entire table on there. This is a technical error with the site itself, and I will look into it as soon as possible.

In the meantime, I would recommend loading the page on the computer if possible. Thank you for letting me know! If you turn your phone rotation sideways to landscape then the whole table is visible.
