The following are all of the vitamins that are still considered vitamins some, like B4, are no longer considered vitamins in the Vitamin B complex. Thiamine affects nerve function, and plays a role in the creation of energy and DNA.

A study in Vietnam did appear to link Thiamine intake to an improvement in anxiety levels for those with generalized anxiety disorder.

However, when looking at the study further, it appears that it only involved 9 people, all nine were low in thiamine, they were all over the age of 50, and there was no control group. That means the study is not credible. There do not appear to be any other studies that link thiamine to a reduction in anxiety or stress, with the exception of those that are thiamine deficient.

Yet not enough research has been completed. Riboflavin is linked to energy production and oxidation of fatty acids. Instead, it reduces oxidative stress, which is unrelated.

It's unclear if there is any benefit to an improved immune system on anxiety. Stress itself weakens the immune system as a response to a release of stress hormones. It seems unlikely that boosting the immune system will reduce stress levels.

Riboflavin has been linked to a reduction in migraines, so it's conceivable that if anxiety is causing your migraines that riboflavin could have some benefit, but the likelihood of that is slim to none.

Niacin can actually be derived from tryptophan, so consuming niacin itself may not even be necessary to ensure you're not deficient.

However, niacin cannot be stored, so deficiency is possible. Niacin plays a role in your skin health, conversion of energy from carbohydrates, and possibly cholesterol production. Many natural health supporters claim niacin produces serotonin, or plays a role in serotonin production. This does not appear to be true.

Rather, tryptophan — an amino acid — is used by the body to create both niacin and serotonin. Niacin has also been partnered with other drugs because it appears to cross the blood brain barrier, but there is currently no research that confirms that niacin alone has any anxiolytic properties.

Pantothenic Acid is one of the lesser known B-Vitamins to the average individual, as it is not commonly used as a natural health supplement.

But it's still an important one. It plays a role in the creation of the acetylcholine neurotransmitters, oxidizes fatty acids, and more.

It also produces CoEnzyme-A. It's rare to be deficient in B5. The name itself translates almost literally to "from everywhere" because it's found in nearly every type of food.

While Pantothenic Acid may help with a variety of unfortunate and painful conditions, it does not appear to play any role in anxiety or stress whatsoever.

Pyridoxine synthesizes neurotransmitters and amino acids, and cannot be stored in the body. There is currently no research on whether or not Pyridoxine has any anxiolytic effects. But a study on monkeys did find that an increase in Pyridoxine appeared to increase serotonin levels.

It also appeared to decrease anxiety in those with premenstrual syndrome, and a deficiency in B6 appeared to increase psychological stress in grieving men. Biotin is a vitamin that helps process and metabolize lipids, carbohydrates, and proteins. It's essential for transferring carbon dioxide, and may help prevent diabetes.

It's unlikely that biotin helps improve anxiety because excess amounts of biotin are produced on a daily basis in the intestines by bacteria. Every day you have more biotin than your body traditionally needs. It is unclear if Biotin supplementation would improve anxiety levels.

Folic Acid, or "Folate," is a vitamin that needs to be consumed in food. Folate helps synthesize DNA, repair DNA, and prevent anemia. Folic acid deficiency is still fairly rare in most Western diets.

Folic acid does have a variety of useful purposes, and doctors may recommend folic acid supplementation. Studies have found that folic acid deficiency may lead to anxiety and depression, and some studies claim that folic acid may reduce depression when taken in conjunction with vitamin B Vitamin B12 plays a role in the development of anemia, nerve disorders, and cognitive deficits.

Its status as one of the B vitamins that affects the brain and nerves the most has made it a popular choice of supplements for those trying to treat their anxiety with Vitamin B.

B12 is also difficult to absorb in the elderly so it's a popular supplement choice for those over Deficiency can lead to mood problems, including depression and anxiety.

It can affect nerve tissue and affect memory. There are also a few studies that indicate that low B12 levels are more common than previously believed and may have an effect on mental health even if they don't reach the point of deficiency.

Several studies have shown that B12 may be helpful for those suffering from depression, including one study conveniently titled: "High vitamin B12 level and good treatment outcome may be associated in major depressive disorder.

Anecdotally, many people struggling with anxiety have noted that they have seen a decrease in their anxiety levels after taking B-Vitamin Complex. But it is more likely to be an example of the placebo effect.

There is not yet any research indicating that B-Vitamins reduce anxiety. It would be useful if more research was conducted. There is a lack of true studies that control successfully for B-Vitamin's effects on anxiety symptoms.

However, it's not advised to simply start taking B-Vitamins and hope that they improve anxiety. There is currently no reason to believe it will have much benefit. Of all the different B-Vitamins, only B12, B9, and B6 have been linked to anti-anxiety effects, and in most cases these links are related to deficiencies.

Vitamins and natural supplements can be an interesting complement to other anxiety reduction strategies, but they are typically not likely to be effective enough on their own.

You can ask your doctor for a referral to a psychologist or other mental health professional who uses relaxation techniques to help patients. Not all psychologists or other mental health professionals are knowledgeable about these techniques, though. Training varies by the type of technique that they use.

Deficiencies in vitamin B6 and folate are also common in older adults 14 , Additionally, the MTHFR genetic mutation can affect how your body metabolizes folate, which can lead to a folate deficiency and other health concerns In these circumstances, people are often advised to supplement with a B-complex vitamin to correct or avoid deficiencies.

Vitamin B12 is naturally found in animal products like meat, dairy, eggs, and seafood. A daily B-complex vitamin can help ensure that people who choose to follow diets that eliminate animal products are getting enough of these important nutrients.

For example, proton pump inhibitors, which are medications that lower stomach acid, can decrease the absorption of B12, whereas metformin, a popular diabetes drug, can decrease levels of both B12 and folate 24 , Birth control pills can also deplete several B vitamins, including B6, B12, folate, and riboflavin Pregnancy, medical conditions, surgeries, genetics, medications, dietary restrictions, and age can all affect how your body absorbs and uses B vitamins.

B-complex vitamins are often used to reduce fatigue and boost mood. Some studies suggest that B vitamins can lift your spirits and improve your cognitive performance. A day study in healthy men found that treatment with a high dose B-complex and mineral supplement improved general mental health and stress and enhanced performance on cognitive tests Another study in young adults showed that supplementing with a multivitamin containing high levels of B-complex vitamins for 90 days reduced stress and mental fatigue While B-complex vitamin supplements are not a cure for mental health conditions, they may help improve symptoms of depression or anxiety.

A study in 60 adults with depression showed that treatment with a vitamin B complex for 60 days led to significant improvements in depression and anxiety symptoms, compared with a placebo B vitamins may also enhance treatment response when given in combination with antidepressant medication.

One study found that supplementing with a vitamin containing B12, B6, and folic acid led to a more enhanced and lasting antidepressant response over 1 year, compared with a placebo B-complex supplements may relieve stress, boost cognitive performance, and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, even in people without B vitamin deficiencies.

Each B vitamin has a specific recommended daily amount that varies depending on biological sex, age, and other factors like pregnancy. For women and men, the recommended daily intake RDI for B vitamins is as follows:.

Pregnant and lactating people need higher amounts of B vitamins, while infants and children need less If you are deficient in B vitamins, you may need to supplement with higher doses to address the deficiency. Speak with a healthcare professional about your specific nutrient needs based on your age and health.

The recommended intake for B vitamins varies depending on age, nutrient demands, biological sex, and health status. However, taking supplements that contain excessively high and unnecessary quantities of B vitamins could lead to serious side effects.

High doses of supplemental B3 niacin may lead to vomiting, high blood sugar levels, skin flushing , and even liver damage Additionally, high doses of B6 can cause nerve damage, light sensitivity, and painful skin lesions Another side effect of B-complex supplements is that they can turn your urine bright yellow.

If you need to take a B-complex supplement, always choose reputable brands that volunteer to have their products independently tested by organizations like the US Pharmacopeia USP.

Although taking a vitamin B complex as directed is likely safe, consuming high doses of B3 or B6 can lead to serious side effects. Pregnant people, older adults, vegans, and those with certain medical conditions may benefit from taking a B-complex supplement.

The NCCIH states that valerian is safe for otherwise healthy adults to use for short periods and that people use it for anxiety. However, more studies are needed before researchers know whether it is effective. There are, as yet, no studies that prove it is safe for long-term use.

A double-blind study compared the effects of valerian and a placebo on 48 women experiencing postmenopause. It notes that those who took the supplements reported lower levels of anxiety and depression.

Valerian can have adverse effects when people take it with sedatives and anxiety medications, such as benzodiazepines. Chamomile is a daisy-like flower that people have used for thousands of years for its calming effects.

The best way to make sure you're getting enough B and other vitamins is to eat a healthy diet that includes sources of essential nutrients. Vitamin B is plentiful in animal products such as fish, lean meat, poultry, eggs, and low-fat and fat-free milk.

Fortified breakfast cereals also are a good source of B and other B vitamins. Keep in mind, the role of B vitamins in depression isn't clear and more research is needed. And no supplement can replace proven depression treatments such as antidepressants and psychological counseling.

Latest news Ovarian tissue freezing may help delay, and even prevent menopause. B6 Vitamin B6 added to thousands of supplements, including multivitamins, B vitamins and energy drinks.

B6 can increase the production and release of various stimulating neurotransmitters including norepinephrine noradrenaline and dopamine. While this energizing is usually a welcome effect, problems can occur when the dose of B6 is too high, especially when it is too high relative to other B vitamins.

Excess vitamin B6 can increase the likelihood of side effects such as anxiety, irritability, restlessness and sometimes numbness in the extremities. B12 B12 is a very popular supplement for energy and vitality. In the US many people are actually deficient in B12, especially older populations. However, like vitamin B6, higher doses of B12 are know to increase neurotransmitter levels, acting as a stimulant.

Also note that when removing a B vitamin supplement the negative symptoms will gradually decrease over weeks; here again, it is very unusual to stop taking a B supplement one or two days and notice much of a difference.

But over the course of weeks it will become more clear. So if you are sensitive to B vitamins you may even have to look out for all of these other sources as well.

Over the course of a day if you have a number of these food and drink items the dose could easily build up and cause problems. We help you make the most out of your insurance plan!
